‘God created the world in Vila Nova de Gaia, on a hot May afternoon in 1930.’
– José Rentes de Carvalho, in ‘Ernestina,’ 1998
‘Ernestina’ is an autobiographical novel by José Rentes de Carvalho – not a diary, nor an accurate representation of his life, but rather what he saw in the streets where he passed, on the quay pavement of Gaia, through the window of his house – a look at his life and that of his family between the years 1930 and 1950, a narration of experiences between Trás-os-Montes and Vila Nova de Gaia. His mother, Ernestina, is the protagonist of this incredible literary work.
