Cycling in Gaia

1. The Afurada Coastal Bike Path

From Cais de Gaia to Afurada - 6 kilometers in a straight line

Come and cycle between tradition and modernity with a mandatory stop in an important Nature Reserve. Starting at Cais de Gaia, the Marginal da Afurada Cycle Path unfolds along the Douro River, passing by the shipyard and beneath the majestic Arrábida Bridge.

Keep pedalling until you reach the untouched and traditional fishing village of Afurada, where the characteristic smell of grilled fish will immediately reveal that you are on the right path! The bustle of this community is evident, from the old washhouse where clothes are still washed by hand to the surprising array of handmade clotheslines (reminiscent of colourful art installations) where clothes are left to dry in the breeze.

This is the essence of the people of Afurada, which blends with the modernity of the marina and the cafes you’ll find further along the route.

Take a break during this ride to enjoy the tranquillity of the Douro Estuary Nature Reserve, the home of diverse and impressive wildlife. Countless “feathered friends” are waiting for you, some of whom live there permanently, and others that arrive in flocks with the changing seasons. Stop, observe, take a deep breath…

Before heading back to the starting point, “park” your bike and recharge at one of Afurada’s typical restaurants, where you can savour the catch of the day.

2. Seaside Track

From Afurada to Espinho - 15 linear km

Did you know that this route is part of one of the most important cycling routes in Europe that crosses the entire continent? It’s the Euro Velo, and the Portuguese route extends along the entire coast.

It’s where the river merges with the ocean at Cabedelo Beach (just after the Marginal da Afurada Cycle Path) that another incredible set of cycle paths along the extensive coastline of Gaia begins. These cycle paths, which can be seen as one, take you from beach to beach on two wheels. With each pedal, you’ll be amazed by the excellent landscapes that the proximity to the sea has to offer.

Remember to stop for refreshments at one of the many bars and restaurants you’ll find along this route. Public places to sit with a view of the maritime horizon are also plentiful!

There are 15 linear kilometres to cycle through, ending at Granja Beach, the famous beach from the books of Sophia de Mello Breyner. But if you’re an experienced cyclist and still feel like riding more, continue to the neighbouring municipality, Espinho. You can return by pedalling or by train!

Be amazed at every step

Walking in Gaia

1. Gaia Coastal Boardwalks

It’s one of those routes you can’t afford to miss! These 20 kilometres will leave you speechless. Walk along our Atlantic coast, side by side with the ocean, feel the sea breeze, and connect with the coastal communities of Vila Nova de Gaia. Along the way, you’ll discover our exceptional Atlantic beaches (did you know we are the second Portuguese municipality with the most “Blue Flag” classified beaches?) and explore incredible cultural and natural points of interest.

Here’s a tip: Take your time with the entire route! Take a break at one of the many restaurants and bars by the sea. Enjoy a refreshing drink (or a coffee), have a meal, and be amazed by the ocean views! After recharging, continue on the path!

Walking

2. Ribeira do Espírito Santo Boardwalks

This is one of those treasures that few people know about! It is an incredible route that will take you from the interior of the Arcozelo parish to the majestic coastline, where the mystical Senhor da Pedra Chapel emerges among the rocks and the tide (right by the sea).

The beauty of this route is truly something special, and it’s safe to say that here, “the means justifies the end.” It’s a 3 km journey accessible to all, starting near the Chapel of Santa Maria de Adelaide. But the middle… oh, the middle… is genuinely unique! Without giving away too much, we can tell you that you’ll encounter pure green landscapes, captivating watercourses, and a natural diversity that will surprise you. Your desire to take a deep breath will grow with every step you take.

3. PR1 - Febros River Trail

This is the only officially approved walking trail in Vila Nova de Gaia. It covers 4.5 km of a linear route that allows you to explore the interior of our territory.

Here, it’s pure nature. The houses are traditional. The windmills are immense. The people are incredibly hospitable. If you’re someone who always sees a walking trail, you absolutely have to do this one. And the best part is that we’re in Avintes, so trying the famous Broa de Avintes (cornbread) is a “must”!
