Do you know what year the Beira-Rio Market building was constructed? No? Let us tell you. It was built in 1904 to house the market that used to take place outdoors, but it was only in 1937 that fruits and vegetables began to be sold here!

3. Teixeira Lopes House-Museum and Diogo de Macedo Galleries

To understand more about the culture of Gaia, it also involves getting to know the personalities and artists born in our territory and the invaluable legacy they left behind… Built-in 1895, the Teixeira Lopes House Museum is an immense collection dedicated to the art and life of António Teixeira Lopes. In this inspiring space, you can explore an unmissable collection of magnificent sculptures.

Do you know who designed this imposing house? No? Now you will know. The architect José Teixeira Lopes, brother of António, designed this majestic space to serve as the residence and workshop of his brother… a family of immense talent!

Additionally, the Diogo de Macedo Galleries are also housed here, gathering the collection of the sculptor and student of Teixeira Lopes, the Gaiense artist Diogo de Macedo. This nineteenth-century building welcomes you to an outdoor courtyard that is adorned with works of art! The Teixeira Lopes House Museum and the Diogo de Macedo Galleries are genuinely exemplars of art in Gaia. They allow those who visit to immerse themselves in the visual arts of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
