Did you know Gaia is the second Portuguese destination with the most Blue Flag beaches?

We want all visitors to enjoy the quality of our beaches. That’s why six of our beaches have been classified as “Accessible Beaches” by the National Institute for Rehabilitation. Each of these beaches has an amphibious chair and bathing support service available. The six accessible beaches are:

Are you someone who likes to stay active during your beach vacation? If so, we have a variety of water activities available for you to enjoy!
For those who love surfing and longboarding, we recommend Canide Norte Beach (photo). This beach has hosted numerous national, European, and world longboard championships, including the world championships in 2016 and 2017. Other beaches in Gaia, such as Salgueiros Beach and Canidelo Beach, provide excellent conditions for a range of water sports. Whether experienced or a beginner, we invite you to ride the waves and explore the sea.

Gaia Boardwalks along the Coastal Area. Have you heard of them?
This is the trail you can’t miss! It’s 20 kilometers that will leave you amazed. Walk along our Atlantic coast, right next to the ocean, feel the sea breeze, and connect with the coastal communities of Vila Nova de Gaia. Along the route, in addition to our exceptional Atlantic beaches, you’ll encounter incredible points of cultural and natural interest.
Here’s a tip: Only do the entire route without stopping! Pause at one of the many restaurants and bars by the sea. Enjoy a refreshing drink (or a coffee), have a bite to eat, and be mesmerized by the sea view. After recharging your energy, continue the journey!

You should know that we also have them. Four river beaches that will leave you enchanted! Boat trips on the Douro River are highly sought after. During the ride, you’ll be treated to a unique experience with breathtaking landscapes that you shouldn’t miss. That’s why when you’re at our river beaches, you’re bound to see many boats traveling up the river towards Porto-Régua or down the river towards Régua-Porto.
We’re sharing this story to introduce you to one of the traditions that have endured in these lands – waving to the people traveling on the boats!
For several decades, we have been spontaneously and sincerely returning waves to people on boats passing by our shores. No matter how many times we do it, the joy we feel is indescribable. Even without knowing each other, we share a moment of pure happiness.
This simple gesture is a part of our identity and hospitality. It’s how our people show their warmth and welcoming nature to others.

Come and experience the charm of the river beaches of Gaia and immerse yourself in the refreshing waters and culture of our local communities. The people of Gaia are known for their warm welcome and will greet you with a smile and a friendly “Good morning” or “Good afternoon”.
Visit Arnelas beach (pictured) to explore a fascinating history. During the 19th century, the Arnelas dock was one of the most important river ports and crossing points on the Douro River. It served as a vital stopping point for large boats carrying various products, from wood and grains to the famous Douro wines and precious sea salt.
The dock was also a significant river fishing port. Although it no longer has the same economic importance, it’s a common sight to see local fishermen gathered near the beach, sharing stories and enjoying relaxed moments while fishing in the waters of the Douro.

OMG, Bolas de Berlim…
Important tip! If you’re on one of Gaia’s beaches and don’t try the traditional Bolas de Berlim, your experience will be incomplete! True Story! As Barney Stinson from the famous series How I Met Your Mother would say, it’s “legend… wait for it… DARY”!!!
Even if you’re having a fantastic day, it will reach a whole new level when your lips touch the sugar of the Bola de Berlim.
With cream or without cream? We won’t enter that debate! Regardless of what you choose, believe us, you’ll love it!
