Be natural - Exploring Gaia's Fauna and Flora
1. Gaia Biological Park
A natural treasure to be discovered in the heart of Vila Nova de Gaia.
When you arrive here (don’t be startled by the dinosaur you’ll encounter, which usually delights the younger ones), feel the tranquillity of nature and immerse yourself in the experience of an environment that touches the heart and soul, located in the parish of Avintes, about 15 minutes from the city centre.
While exploring the Gaia Biological Park trails, you will come across various habitats of the creatures that call this place home. These creatures warmly share their world, allowing us to experience an intimate glimpse into their lives and uniquely connect with nature.
This won’t be just a visit; it’s a chance to connect with nature, breathe fresh air, and create memories.

2. Local Natural Reserve of the Douro River Estuary
Here, life unfolds in all its diversity. Near the fishing village of Afurada, the Natural Reserve of the Douro River Estuary is a sanctuary for numerous species and thousands of migratory birds linked to estuarine ecosystems, finding protection along its shores.
If you delight in birdwatching, know that this is your must-visit spot! The suspended walkways that depart from the interpretive center offer an opportunity to freely explore the area. Extending to two observatories, one facing the marsh and the other a few hundred meters away, you can enjoy breathtaking views.
The Local Natural Reserve of the Douro River Estuary is not just a place to explore but also to be inspired. Here, the simplicity and beauty of nature open the senses and invite contemplation. Nature is your classroom, and the lessons you learn here will stay with you forever.

3. Aguda Coastal Station
Aguda Coastal Station is a magnificent coastal paradise awaiting adventurous explorers and marine enthusiasts. Nestled on the shores of the Atlantic, precisely Aguda Beach, a small fishing village situated in the parish of Arcozelo, this place offers an exciting and educational experience for all ages. Visitors get to witness the wonders of the ocean unfold before their very eyes.
Discover three attractions in one space: a fishing museum showcasing antique and modern tools, an aquarium featuring the region’s aquatic life, and a research and education department dedicated to marine ecology and aquaculture.
From young explorers to adults, everyone can enjoy this vibrant and fascinating underwater world.

5. Aguda Dunes Park
Before this park existed, beach access was disorderly, and the damage to the dune was evident to all. We decided to act in favour of conserving the incredible dune ecosystem by creating Aguda Dunes Park.
Here, we can observe a dynamic ecosystem home to a myriad of plant and animal species, each adapted to life in the unique conditions of the dunes.
The Aguda Dunes Park is not just a place of beauty but also of learning. While here, visit the Interpretation Center, a small building with a fantastic collection of shells and a set of adequately illustrated panels supporting visitors.
Be Amazed by Gaia's Green Parks
Here, every breath is a gift, and every step is a chance to disconnect and recharge. You’ll cherish the moments of complete relaxation when you visit.
But most importantly, take your time with our green parks (unless that’s your intention – if so, you must read our Be Active itinerary).
But if not… Allow time in your travel plan to explore them. Let yourself rest. Close your eyes and inhale. Sit and contemplate the scenery. Read. Listen to the birds chirping. Venture. Challenge yourself. Play with the kids. Smile. It’s in these small moments that life (and travel) takes on a new dimension.
There are plenty of reasons to wander through Gaia’s Green Parks. And there are plenty of options, too. So, don’t settle for just one!

1. Botanical Park of Castelo
You’ll find even more places in our territory where nature takes the spotlight! Specifically in Crestuma, you can visit the Botanical Park of Castelo.
The green space has a unique layout, built on terraces. As you ascend higher, the landscape overlooking the Douro River becomes more enchanting. It’s one of those rare cases where the effort pays off.
Far from everything, the Botanical Park of Castelo is a true paradise for nature and botanical enthusiasts.

2. Morro Garden
The most well-known of all is perhaps Morro Garden, next to the Luís I Bridge. After a recent rehabilitation, this space has become one of the trendiest spots in Gaia (and maybe even Portugal).
The breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Douro River and the city of Porto enchant those who pass by, testifying to the beauty of the urban and riverside landscape.
Many people stay until sunset. Sitting here, you’ll feel your calm life, the pace of the journey slowing down, and you’ll surrender to the moment’s beauty.
As night falls, the city’s sparkling lights create a magical setting, perfect for a romantic moment or simply to appreciate the grandeur of life.
Extra tip: If you enjoy exercising but not intensively, the Maria Pia Bridge Park – Fitness Park is for you! Less than a 10-minute walk from Morro Garden, it is an incredible and serene space.

3. Monte Murado Park
Suppose you’re searching for a serene location to reflect, meditate or just enjoy the tranquillity of nature. In that case, Monte Murado Park is the perfect choice. At the summit of this hill, you will discover the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, one of our city’s most significant religious sites.
The surrounding space provides moments of complete relaxation, whether you want to take a leisurely walk or engage in mindfulness activities.
But know that this is also one of the best places for family outings and picnics. You’ll find several stone tables! You’ll probably find several people playing ‘sueca’ (a Portuguese card game). If you enjoy playing card games, it’s time to challenge experienced players!
Nearby, we also recommend visiting the green park of Corgas in Seixezelo, which is perfect for a break.

4. Quinta do Conde das Devesas Park
If you haven’t found any previous suggestions interesting, don’t worry; we have more options! Have you considered visiting Quinta do Conde das Devesas Park? A few years ago, the Municipality of Gaia converted the gardens surrounding the Solar do Conde das Devesas into a public park in the centre of Gaia. Since then, visitors have been pleasantly surprised! And it’s easy to see why!
The place is a perfect picture with breathtaking gardens filled with camellias (flowers), exotic trees, serene lakes, and a charming grotto. However, the camellias are the main attraction for visitors from all over the world. Among the numerous varieties, some Portuguese origins are worth mentioning, such as Camões, which displays a delicate blend of pink and white colours; Duque de Loulé, decorated with the same colours; and Conde da Torre, whose slightly fringed petals are pure white.
As you wander these paths, you’ll be transported to a bygone era when this land was a place of noble gatherings and artistic inspiration.

5. Lavandeira Park
You must include the Municipal Park of Lavandeira in your travel plan, located in Oliveira do Douro, just 10 minutes from Jardim do Morro. There are various public transport options available to get there.
As soon as you step inside, you’ll be greeted with the refreshing scent of greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. This natural area provides a rejuvenating refuge from the fast-paced city life. The lush green grass is perfect for picnics, the shaded spots offer an excellent place to relax, and the winding pathways provide an opportunity for exploration. It’s an ideal spot for anyone seeking tranquillity and contemplation.
Are you a parent? If so, a visit to Lavandeira Park is a must! The park features an incredible play area inspired by Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” complete with a theme that emphasizes the story’s great moral: “Our dreams come true when we embark on a vehicle made of persistence and courage.” Your kids will love it!
Extra tip: Another space we recommend for those with children is São Caetano Park, located in Vilar do Paraíso, which offers visitors a rural setting and a green area with a go-kart track and spaces dedicated to outdoor activities.
